Over 70 crew members and six canines from the Coun Over 70 crew members and six canines from the County Fire Department’s (@lacountyfd) Search and Rescue Team were deployed to Venezuela for 11 days to support local first responders following the June 24 earthquake.   At this week’s Board meeting, we recognized these firefighters for their bravery, service, and unwavering commitment to protecting lives wherever they are at risk.   Our hearts are with the people of Venezuela as they mourn loved ones, continue searching for those who remain missing, and begin the long process of rebuilding their communities.

Four years ago on July 20, we joined with the comm Four years ago on July 20, we joined with the community to return Bruce’s Beach to the descendants of Charles and Willa Bruce, nearly a century after it was wrongfully taken from the Bruce family through policies rooted in systemic racism.   I am proud to have co-authored the motion with Supervisor Hahn that helped make the return of Bruce’s Beach possible. It took years of advocacy leading up to our motion and more than a year of collaboration among the County, the State, advocates, and the Bruce family to make it a reality.   This was always about righting an historic injustice and restoring the Bruce family’s autonomy to decide how best to utilize the land that was always theirs.   Bruce’s Beach was one of the only safe places for Black beachgoers a century ago, it will always be a significant part of our County and history.   While we cannot change the past, we must have the courage to face it and remain committed to challenging racism and inequities that persist.   To learn more, visit: ceo.lacounty.gov/ardi/bruces-beach/ (link in bio)

Big things are bubbling up at the La Brea Tar Pits Big things are bubbling up at the La Brea Tar Pits (@thelabreatarpits)! Team Mitchell recently stopped by to see the only active Ice Age fossil site in our district and the world as it prepares for renovations for the first time in 50 years!   While the La Brea Tar Pits is currently closed to the public, it will reopen in 2028 with a spectacular and expanded museum that will include The Samuel Oschin Global Center for Ice Age Research.   Parts of Hancock Park will remain open throughout renovations for residents and our four-legged constituents to enjoy.   And the science doesn’t stop during construction. Fossils will continue to be dug up every day providing important data for helping us understand and protect our current ecosystem.   A special thank you to the teams behind this incredible work.   We can’t wait for you to experience the exciting changes to the museum. Today would have marked the late visionary philanthropist’s 87th birthday.   Wallis understood that government cannot solve our biggest challenges alone. Through thoughtful public-private partnerships, she expanded access to STEM education, made our cultural institutions more welcoming and inclusive, strengthened our response during times of crisis, and invested in healthier, more equitable communities.   Thank you to the Annenberg family for carrying on an extraordinary legacy of generosity, innovation, and service.

Team Mitchell recently joined Charles R. Drew Univ Team Mitchell recently joined Charles R. Drew University (@charlesrdrewu) to celebrate the ribbon cutting of its new Health Professions Education Building.   This 60,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility is now home to CDU’s College of Medicine and serves as a welcome hub for learning, innovation, and opportunity in our Willowbrook community.
Earlier this year during my monthly Sippin’ My Tea Earlier this year during my monthly Sippin’ My Tea, we highlighted the no-cost home improvement resources available through Rebuilding Together (@rebuildingtogether) and Neighborhood Housing Services of LA County (NHS) (@nhslacounty) to help seniors make their homes safer and more accessible.   Check out this video to get the tea on this impactful program. When the Ladera Heights community voted on project When the Ladera Heights community voted on projects they wanted to see funded through our 2nd District Community Budget, a mural at the Yvonne Burke Senior Center was among the top voted projects.   This summer, members of the LA Conservation Corps, alongside local residents, brought that vision to life with Pepper Tree Paradise—a vibrant mural that reflects the community’s vision.   Now, everyone who visits the center can enjoy artwork that brightens the outdoor space and creates an even more welcoming environment.   Thank you to Andrea, Carlos, the LA Conservation Corps (@lacorps), and everyone who helped make this beautiful mural a reality.
🎬 Lights, camera, action!   California’s expanded 🎬 Lights, camera, action!   California’s expanded Film & Television Tax Credit Program 4.0 is already delivering results. In its first year, 170 film and television projects are projected to generate $6.6 billion in economic activity and support nearly 35,000 cast and crew jobs across the state.   As a member of the California Film Commission and the author of the legislation establishing California’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program 3.0 during my tenure as a State Senator, I’m proud to see the expanded program creating jobs, supporting local economies, and driving investment across California.   Check out the latest Film Commission update🎬
Once again, after hearing from the rising leaders Once again, after hearing from the rising leaders who are part of the Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute, I’m convinced that the future is in good hands.   Congratulations to the 33 young women who made up our inaugural cohort and graduated today!   I’m proud to have partnered with the California Black Women’s Empowerment Collective Institute (@cablackwomenscollective) and Mount Saint Mary’s University (@msmu_la) to create a safe and supportive space for young Black and Brown girls to tap into their innate leadership skills, confidence, and power.   Six months later, it was inspiring to see their Capstone presentations and hear, in their own words, how they are embracing their voices and ability to impact the world.   This is only the beginning. Thank you!
