LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Los Angeles County Supervisor, Holly J. Mitchell, representing the Second District hosted a Veterans Food Drive-Thru Distribution to address food insecurity among veterans and military families in Culver City. Local families and veterans were served with groceries donated by SEE-LA and connected to resources shared by the Veteran Peer Access Network.

Veterans Food Drive

The event was hosted at the Culver City Senior Center in partnership with the County of LA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the Culver City Recreation & Community Services Department with the support of volunteers who helped place groceries directly onto vehicles following COVID-19 safety guidelines.

“A majority of veterans are over the age of 60 and with the pandemic impacting our senior community the hardest, it is our responsibility to ensure they have the resources to live healthy lives,” said Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. “Our veterans have already given so much for our country and food insecurity isn’t something they should have to worry about.”

“In appreciation for having served our nation and veteran community, this food distribution is to honor them and their families.  We also want veterans to know that our Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is here to help with benefits and services,” said Brigadier General Ruth A. Wong, United States Air Force (Ret).

Since April 2020, LA County has provided more than 6 million meals to residents in need. To find additional food resources, residents can call 211 or visit https://covid19.lacounty.gov/food. To connect to veteran resources, please visit https://mva.lacounty.gov.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Today, Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, representing the Second District, organized a Mother’s Day distribution with Baby2Baby that provided hundreds of families in the Watts-Willowbrook community with diapers, wipes and special Mother’s Day gifts at the local Boys and Girls Club and Project Homekey site.

“I am proud to partner with Baby2Baby in providing these useful and fun items to families that need it the most in our district and thankful for the community organizations like HOPICS, Boys and Girls Club and A New Way of Life, that are helping to serve our most vulnerable residents.” shared Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. “This small gesture is about celebrating birth mamas and community mamas that do the impossible each day while facing life’s on-going challenges

Baby2Baby – a non-profit that provides children living in poverty with diapers, clothing, and the necessities every child deserves – provided diaper bags filled with diapers, hygiene items and more, plus a special Mother’s Day gift and flowers. The non-profit, A New Way of Life also donated hundreds of slippers to share with moms. In addition to receiving gift bags, residents were also able to gain on-site COVID-19 vaccinations at the Boys and Girls Club location and connect with local community partners for on-going services and support.

“We are so proud to partner with Supervisor Mitchell on a special Mother’s Day distribution in her district,” shared Baby2Baby Co-CEOs Norah Weinstein and Kelly Sawyer Paticof.  “Mothers have been disproportionately devastated by COVID throughout the pandemic, and it’s critical that we continue to provide families with the basic essentials they need so they can focus their funds on paying their rent, putting food on the table and keeping their children safe after an unprecedented year.”

At the local Project Homekey site, managed by the non-profit, Homeless Outreach Program Integrated Care System (HOPICS), Supervisor Mitchell and Baby2Baby delivered gift bags directly to the doorsteps of over 40 families.

“Everyone deserves a home and to be treated with basic goodness, this is about providing that. We appreciate Supervisor Mitchell for staying engaged with our families and doing something special. These acts of kindness go a long way” shared Victor James, HOPICS, Associate Director of Interim Housing.

Board of Supervisors Approve Motion to Address Public Defender Case Backlog and Protect the Constitutional Right to Legal Representation for Residents

LOS ANGELES, Calif.— The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell’s motion to create a plan for strengthening investments in the County’s justice system by ensuring Public Defender’s have the budgeted resources and staffing capacity to sustainably address its case backlog as a result of COVID-19 and provide legal representation for low-income residents, who rely heavily on indigent defense services.

“Our public defense is one of the most important services that the County provides to vulnerable and low-income communities,” shared Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. “The COVID-19 pandemic has created a backlog of cases, that threatens the constitutional right to due process for millions of residents. I’m proud that the Board has voted in support of properly resourcing our public defense system to ensure that residents who rely on Indigent Defense Services have legal representation and are connected to appropriate alternatives to incarceration.”

In January of this year the Board of Supervisors voted to receive a data assessment from the County’s Public Defender on proposed reforms to support the County’s commitment to alternatives to incarceration and address the challenges with meeting client caseloads due to the pandemic – approximately 90% of trails were postponed without resolution. The data shared substantiated the need for indigent services, revealing that the Public Defender represents over 1.2 million residents who are accused of misdemeanor and felony charges and of that, 79% of residents who rely on indigent services were Black and Latinx.

“Supervisor Mitchell’s priority to Empower Indigent Defense Services in the County of Los Angeles is a critical step to implementing meaningful justice reform. This motion lifts our leadership and advocacy for the indigent accused and empowers our constitutional warriors to fight the crisis of mass incarceration,” shared Ricardo D. Garcia, Los Angeles County’s Public Defender “I am deeply honored and excited to continue working with this Board to advance the vision of Care First, Jail Last and the Public Defender’s vision to be the finest client-centered criminal defense firm in the nation, providing a beacon for evolutionary and revolutionary changes in the justice system.”

This is the first of series of justice reform policies Supervisor Mitchell will be putting forward leading up to a Juneteenth freedom and justice day of action. The motion instructs the Chief Executive Officer to work with the Public Defender and Director of Personnel to develop a plan for meeting the critical needs of the Public Defenders 2021-2022 Fiscal Year budget requests which includes the constitutional mandate to provide indigent defendants with quality legal representation in criminal cases.

In addition, the motion calls for a recruitment plan in collaboration with the County’s Anti-Racism and Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. To view motion click here.
