LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Today the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted in support of a motion authored by Supervisor Lindsey Horvath and co-authored by Supervisor Kathryn Barger, proclaiming a Local Emergency for Homelessness in the County of Los Angeles. Supervisor Mitchell provided the following the statement on her support for the motion and the approval of her proposed amendments:

“Proclaiming a Local Emergency for Homelessness in the County gives us yet another opportunity to put into action our Anti-Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiative. In my district and across LA County, Black and Latino populations are the majority of people experiencing homelessness. This makes a commitment to racial equity a requirement for truly addressing this crisis at its core.”

“I am proud to join my colleagues in voting yes on this motion and to have their support in accepting my amendments that focus on ensuring the County is utilizing our Anti-Racism and Inclusion tools to: better protect and serve the diverse needs of people who are unhoused, prioritize the distribution of resources to the geographies with the highest need and to be accountable in how Measure H funding is being allocated to serve the communities and populations that are disproportionately impacted.”

“The County and this Board’s work to improve our housing system and end homelessness has been and will continue to be a priority that is backed with action. This proclamation, with my amendments, now centers equity so that we can remove bureaucratic barriers without continuing to perpetuate harm to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.”
