Disability Justice: Stories & Performances of Lived Experiences

We kicked off our 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange series for this year with powerful testimonies, performances, and discussions on the intersection of racial and disability justice.

Together, we listened more than anything to the lived experiences of our fellow residents with disabilities to help challenge ideas of “normal” and explored how we can build a more inclusive community for all.

We want to thank our incredible speakers—Paralympian Jamal Hill, Dr. Ifunanya Nweke, Promise Freeman, Vanessa Hernandez Cruz, Faith Anderson, Maria Aguilar Aroch, Michael Agyin, and Brandi Pollard – for sharing their truth and talent through storytelling and performance. Special thanks to Bowen Duan for opening the event with a moving piano performance.

Thank you to our host, the Wende Museum, community partners and County Departments for providing on-site resources and activities that made the day even more impactful.

Celebrating 100 Years of Black History Month

This month’s 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange (RJLE) was especially meaningful as we celebrated 100 years of Black History Month and five years of RJLE.

The event was a powerful reminder that honoring history isn’t just about looking back — it’s about grounding ourselves for the work ahead. We were inspired by speakers Jasmine Hill and Tim Watkins, who challenged us to learn from the past and move forward with purpose.

A special thank you to our storytelling partners — Kids in the Spotlight, LA Commons, and Street Poets — for uplifting community voices, and to the community organizations, historically Black fraternities and sororities, and HBCUs who joined us to connect with and inspire our young people.
Thank you to the incredible marching band from Compton Early College High School for joining us!

Race & Religion: Strength, Justice, and the Work of Repair

We joined with community for a powerful evening of conversation on the impact of systemic racism across diverse religions and action we can take—grounded in truth, reflection, and a shared commitment to justice.
This gathering was not an endpoint—it was a starting point. The responsibility continues with all of us to confront harm, build bridges, and advance racial justice within our communities and beyond.

Thank you to all the organizations, faith leaders, and residents who were part of this event, including: Clue Justice, LA County Department of Mental Health, LA vs Hate, and LA County Library.

The Beat of Resilience: Resisting the Erasure of Diversity in the Arts

We gathered in Inglewood at the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center for this month’s Racial Justice Learning Exchange event, The Beat of Resilience: Resisting the Erasure of Diversity in the Arts. Together, we participated in interactive workshops focused on dance, music and creative writing, engaged in conversations on the erasure of BIPOC artists, and discussed how we can support in building a future for the arts that reflects the people and cultures of our communities.

A special thank you to the LA Phil for partnering with us, Chuck Dickerson, Executive Director, and Conductor of the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA), Tyree Boyd-Pates for presenting and emceeing, and all the incredible performers including YOLA Institute Concert Orchestra percussion ensemble, Thalia Moore, and ICYOLA String Quartet.

Thank you to our workshop leads Joel Jacinto, 1500 Sound Academy, YOLA Teaching Artists – Perry Hayes & Brandon Forte, LA Phil Percussionist Wesley Sumpter, Brenda Flores, and Get Lit and the County Departments and community organizations that provided on-site resources.

#FiltersOff: How Digital Bias Shapes What We Believe

For this month’s 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange, community members joined us for an engaging and eye-opening conversation on how algorithms, misinformation, and racial bias influence the content we consume every day.

Together, with the help of our amazing guest speaker Nora Benavidez of Free Press, we explored the real-world impact of digital bias and shared practical tools to help participants recognize and challenge harmful narratives online.

A special thank you to West LA College for hosting and partnering with us on this event, and to the organizations and County departments that provided onsite resources:

6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration & Resource Fair

In our unincorporated Willowbrook community, we asked ourselves: What does freedom mean today? And together, we showed that the answer is unapologetic joy, access to opportunity, and an empowered community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration & Resource Fair and helped make it such a special event—what a beautiful day it was.

A special thank you to all the County departments that joined us onsite, along with our community partners, small businesses, food vendors, performers, sponsors, and amazing volunteers. We could not do this without you.

Stronger Together: Building Multiracial Solidarity for Collective Power

This RJLE event showed us that solidarity starts with pulling up a chair and being open to listening to someone else’s lived experience.

Over 200 residents from throughout our district gathered in Hermosa Beach, not all knowing each other, but willingly rolled up their sleeves and created literal bridges, shared new insights, and danced (because joy is essential to racial justice).

By the end of the night, thanks to our dynamic panel and community partners, attendees left having pledged to keep doing this work.

Farm – 2 – Community: The Power of Local Farms, Fresh Food and the Freedom to Flourish

We rolled up our sleeves and got our hands in the soil for our 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange as we explored the intersection of healthy food access and racial justice.

A big thank you to our host MudTown Farms with the Watts Labor Community Action Committee, and to all the organizations that participated by sharing resources and a commitment to expanding food access.

Everyone who joined us left with a box of fresh produce and seeds to begin growing their own food at home.

Game Changers: Youth Athletes for Equity

Youth from across the 2nd District joined us to participate in volleyball, street hockey, tennis and track & field clinics at Athens Park. The event featured a gallery walk of athletes and activists that broke barriers and paved the way for many to shine in their respective sports. Together we discussed the triumphs and the work ahead to advance youth sports access to ensure that every young person can play and thrive.

We partnered with LoveSetMatch and the LA County Parks Department to bring 10 weeks of FREE STEM tennis classes to Athens Park.
