Community Book Discussion & Financial Literacy Resource Fair

We kicked off of our 2nd District Racial Justice Learning Exchange series for the year with a powerful discussion on racial justice and generational wealth with Mehrsa Baradaran, Professor at UC Irvine and author of "The Color of Money: Black Banks and the Racial Wealth Gap," and Dennis S. Ellis, the lead attorney in the nationwide Wells Fargo Mortgage Discrimination litigation, moderated by our Chief of Staff, Fredericka McGee. The discussion was followed by a financial literary resource fair.

Check out this episode from Netflix’s Explainer Series: Racial Wealth Gap as U.S. Senator, Cory Booker, and others discuss how slavery, housing discrimination, and centuries of inequality have compounded to create a racial wealth gap.

The Legacy of Eminent Domain: Freeway Placements and its Impact on Black and Brown Communities

Together we discussed the history and lasting impact of eminent domain—the government’s ability to acquire private property for public use—and explored how we can meet infrastructure needs without harming communities.
Amber Santoro, a Ph.D. student at the University of Southern California, who presented on the history of the 105 Freeway and its impact on displaced communities. Matthew Brazille, a former student of Saint Leo—a school displaced by eminent domain in 1972—and Dan Lopez, CEO/President of Century Housing. Segregation by Design, Century Housing, and the Jeff Gates “In Our Path” photo series.

Walk & Learn: Mobility Justice in West Adams

We gathered in the West Adams neighborhood for a Racial Justice Learning Exchange event centered on mobility justice and were honored to be joined by Councilmember Heather Hutt and the CD10 team.

Our powerful lineup of community leaders and mobility advocates included Yolanda Davis Overstreet with Biking While Black, Alex Ramirez of LA Walks, Adonia Lugo of the California Transportation Commission, and Eli Lipmen, Executive Director of Move LA. A special thank you to Tamika Butler for her support in helping to conceptualize today’s event, which also included a screening of the documentary Biking While Black, followed by a 1.5-mile walking tour.

Proximity matters in helping to create change; that’s why it was important for us to walk the streets together and share our experiences. The throughline for many of the points raised was the need for our streets to be and feel safe for every person, regardless of where they live or who they are. We have a shared responsibility to do our part in helping to keep our streets safe by paying attention on the road, sharing the road, and being open-minded about the various transportation needs of our diverse communities.

Advancing Racial Justice & Health Equity Through Community-Centered Violence Prevention

We joined with community for a powerful conversation on public safety, hosted in partnership with the County’s Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) and our local Community Action for Peace networks. Together, we unpacked the root causes of racialized disparities in health and safety, guided by the voices of those with lived experience and members of our local Community Action for Peace (CAP) networks.

We encourage residents in the communities above to join the CAP group monthly meetings that are open to all:

5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration & Resource Fair

We joined with our community to be of service and to create a space rooted in joy, solidarity, and connection. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make our 5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration & Resource Fair the most impactful one yet. In addition to on-site services like record expungement, tenant protections, and mental health counseling, we distributed over 400 boxes of food to community members.

It was important to our office that this wasn’t just a one-day event, but instead a lasting investment in Roy Campanella Park – one that residents can enjoy for years to come. As part of that commitment, we reopened the tech center with brand new equipment and launched more than eight weeks of free, ongoing programs that will be onsite.

Our Juneteenth celebration is about asking what freedom means today and doing the work to make that real. At a time when so many of our communities under attack, we remain clear that our freedom is bound to the recognition of our shared humanity and that we must continue to stand up for one another.

Film Screening of the documentary "A Time to Yell: More than a Statue" & Discussion

We hosted a screening of the documentary “A Time to Yell – More than a Statue,” which explores the untold story of the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The film provides historical context and insight behind one of the most divisive events in recent American history.

Our dynamic panel reflected on the lessons learned from the hard-won fight to remove a Confederate statue and what replacing racist symbols can look like for furthering shared values of equity, inclusion, and progress. Another theme we discussed was the reclaiming of public spaces and our well-being through collective action – seen in Charlottesville with the Prolyfyck Run Crew and in Los Angeles with Walkgood LA.

Thank you to the incomparable Sweet Alice for joining us along with our guest speakers: former Charlottesville Vice Mayor, Charlottesville Activist and Co-Founder of Prolyfyk Run Crew, Will Jones III, and Etienne Maurice, Co-Founder of WalkGoodLA.

LA in Color: Queer Stories. Racial truths. Collective joy.

It was an honor to host this event at The Catch One — an iconic venue founded by the beloved Jewel Thais-Williams, whose vision and courage created a necessary space for Black and Brown LGBTQIA+ community members to be seen, loved, and celebrated.

Together, we explored the intersection of racial justice and LGBTQIA+ justice through storytelling and powerful reflections from the book, “Brown and Gay in LA: The Lives of Immigrant Sons” by Anthony Christian Ocampo. Whether you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, an ally, or someone seeking to learn more, I encourage you to read this important and moving book.

Helena Lourdes Donato-Sapp, our brilliant Youth Poet Laureate shared captivating poetry and call-to-action: to be the people we needed when we were younger, or even now. We commit to doing all we can to make your future self proud. Click the hyperlinks to view Helena’s powerful performance of her poem Future Me Thanks You and Resistance.
