LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Holly J. Mitchell, Supervisor to the Second District, released the following statement in response to the murder of Sandra Shells, a healthcare worker and Second District constituent, that died on Sunday, January 16 from injuries she sustained after being attacked at a bus stop at Union Station:

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of Sandra Shells who mourn this unimaginable and tragic loss. Ms. Shells was a healthcare worker who served our community for 38 years at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. She dedicated her life to helping others. It is heartbreaking that she passed due to a violent attack while waiting for the bus. Nothing can justify the loss of Ms. Shells’s life. We must do everything in our power to prevent tragedies like this from reoccurring, this includes doubling our efforts as a County to provide a safe environment for Metro riders that is equipped to quickly respond with mental health access and other supportive services for our unhoused residents.

As Chair, I have requested that the County flags be hung at half-staff in honor of Sandra Shells on Monday January 24th.

Chair Mitchell’s Statement on Los Angeles County’s Lawsuit Against Property Owners at Fault for the Dominguez Channel Odor Incident

LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Holly J. Mitchell, Supervisor to the Second District, released the following statement in response to the County’s lawsuit to recover costs and injunctive relief for the Dominguez Channel Odor Incident caused by a warehouse fire releasing chemicals into the channel:

The property owners responsible for the warehouse fire that released chemicals into the Dominguez Channel must pay for their unlawful business practices that cost the County millions in damages and aid and more importantly, inflicted physical and mental harm on our residents. Today’s lawsuit filing is critical to our ongoing efforts to seek accountability for the thousands of residents in Carson and surrounding communities that endured- for several weeks – the stench that emanated from the Dominguez Channel.

I want to share my gratitude for the multiple government agencies and County departments that have been working tirelessly with my office to investigate the cause of this unprecedented incident and provide rapid aid to our communities. While this lawsuit will not heal all the harm and inconvenience experienced by the thousands of impacted residents, it will help ensure the individuals at fault pay for the pain they caused that could have been prevented. It is also my intent for this lawsuit to send a clear message that businesses that blatantly violate their responsibility in protecting the health and wellbeing of our communities will be held accountable.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Holly J. Mitchell, Supervisor to the Second District, released the following statement in response to a bomb threat at Charles Drew University, located in the Willowbrook community of the Second Supervisorial District:

“I am appalled at the bomb threat Charles Drew University (CDU) received that was motivated by racial prejudice and hatred. CDU is the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in California. Like many HBCU’s, it was founded in response to systemic racism that denied Black Americans the ability to attend the same academic institutions as their White peers.

As one of the few medical schools on the West Coast with a substantial number of Black students, CDU continues to have an immeasurable impact in cultivating Black doctors from individuals across the globe in becoming medical leaders in our diverse community.

I want to thank the Sheriff Department and FBI for their diligent response in ensuring the CDU campus was safe. I stand with CDU for swiftly taking the necessary precautions to protect its students, faculty and the surrounding Willowbrook community. Acts of violence, even the threat of it, will not be tolerated at our schools or anywhere in our communities.”

Los Angeles County Demands Answers for Largest Sewage Spill in LA County Sanitation Districts History and Strengthens Investments in Preventative Measures

Today, in the first public hearing meeting of the year, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by Chair Holly J. Mitchell and co-authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn, to identify the cause of the eight and half million gallons of untreated sewage into County waterways that occurred the end of December, and the necessary steps to prevent sewage spills and protect surrounding communities.

This sewage spill is considered the largest in the history of Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, a public entity that the Board of Supervisors does not directly oversee. Sanitation Districts is responsible for maintaining facilities that collect and treat domestic and industrial wastewater. The spill occurred after a concrete pipe collapsed in the City of Carson despite the sewer line being inspected a few weeks earlier. The cause for the collapse is still unknown and resulted in untreated sewage entering the Dominguez Channel and subsequently County waterways.

“The communities surrounding the Dominguez Channel have been through enough. We demand accountability and greater transparency on why the sewage spill happened and what the Sanitation Districts will do to prevent an incident like this from happening again” shared Chair Holly J. Mitchell. “This motion provides the Sanitation Districts with additional support from County Departments to aid in the investigation so we can take the necessary measures to ensure this does not happen again.”

“A sewage spill of this magnitude is dangerous and unacceptable, and we need to understand what happened. The storm in the days before the incident undoubtedly contributed to the spill, but we need infrastructure that doesn’t fail when it rains” shared Supervisor Janice Hahn. We need a full investigation into the cause of this spill and whether aging or faulty infrastructure was involved.”

The motion instructs the Directors of Department of Public Works, Department of Public Health and Office of Emergency Management to support the Sanitation Districts in their investigation into the exact cause for the sewer infrastructure failure and the status of the health and environmental impacts of the discharge on surrounding communities. It also calls for on-going transparency and accountability with weekly written reports from Public Works to the Board of Supervisors on the status of oxygen levels and recovery efforts within the Dominguez Channel.
